리비아의 독재자를 제거하기 위한 전쟁에서 미군이 쓰는 하루 작전 비용은 1억 달러다.

The war to get rid of Col. Moammar Gadhafi, the Libyan fashion-plate wreck, is already running $100 million a day.

 

The White House says it is not planning to request emergency funding - at least not yet.

 

The Pentagon will have no choice in the matter.

 

열흘이면 10억 달러가 들어간다.

 It will have to request supplemental funding when the meter hits $1 billion. In 10 days, that is.

The several-times-the-speed-of-sound Tomahawk missile, depending on the number of bells and whistles, costs the Pentagon between $600,000 and $1.5 million per kinetic hit. Its pinpoint accuracy can take it through a building's specific window but not through Col. Gadhafi's underground maze, where he has stashed almost $7 billion worth of gold bullion.

In four days, 162 Tomahawks were fired in the get-rid-of-Gadhafi campaign, dubbed Operation Odyssey Dawn.

유엔주재 미국 대사 수전 라이스는 “지상의 상황에 따라 비행금지구역 선포 이상의 조치도 준비할 필요가 있으며 민간인들을 즉각적인 위협으로부터 보호하기 위해서는 비행금지구역에 제한이 있을 수 없다”고 강경하게 주장했다.

Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, didn't look comfortable in the sudden role of martinet.　

"We need to be prepared," she thundered, "to contemplate steps that include, but perhaps go beyond, a no-fly zone at this point, as the situation on the ground has evolved, and as a no-fly zone has inherent limitations in terms of protection of civilians at immediate risk."

 

이런 태도는 전쟁의 수렁에 빠지는 지름길이다.

미국의 중대한 전략적 이해관계가 걸린 지역은 페르시아만이지 리비아가 아니다.

U.S. interests in Libya are decidedly less than vital.

 

리비아 사태는 미국과 무관한 내전일 뿐이다.
It's a Libyan civil war in which the United States does not belong.
