오바마 대통령의 통치 아래미국은 큰 정부, 대규모 정부 예산 지출, 대규모 정부 복지혜택, 높은 세금, 무료 의료보험, “녹색 에너지”라고 불리는 신기루를 위한 거액의 낭비를 하는 유럽식 사회주의 모델을 따라가고 있다.

How did it happen? Under President Obama, America is following the European socialist model of big government, big spending, big entitlements, big taxes, free health care and billions wasted chasing a mirage called “green energy.”

그 결과 미국은 거액의 국가 부채를 지고 파산지경에 이르렀다.

The result is massive debt, insolvency and bankruptcy.

 

구소련이 붕괴되기 전에 그랬듯이 미국은 지금 쇠퇴의 길을 걷고 있다.

We are a nation in decline, much like the old Soviet Union before its collapse.

 

오바마는 세계적으로 자랑스러웠던 국가를 인계받아 삐걱거리는 낡은 건물처럼 만들어 놓았다. 인명피해를 막기 위해 주민들을 대피시킬 필요가 있는 100년 된 낡은 건물처럼 만들었다. 
Mr. Obama has taken an America that used to be the pride of the world and turned it into a creaking, 100-year old building that must be evacuated before someone gets hurt.

미국은 북쪽에 있는 이웃인 캐나다와 반대쪽에 있는 오스트레일리아를 과거 힘없는 바보 사촌으로 취급했다.

지금 두 나라는 미국의 자본주의, 자유시장, 재정의 보수주의를 본받고 있다.

Meanwhile Canada, our neighbor up north, and Australia, on the opposite side of the world, which we’ve treated as our weak, goofy cousins, have followed the American model of capitalism, free markets and fiscal conservatism.

 

두 나라는 유럽을 본받지 않고 로널드 레이건을 본받는다.

They aren’t modeling Europe, they’re modeling Ronald Reagan.

그 결과는 괄목할 만하다.

The results are worth noting.

 

캐나다와 오스트레일리아 경제는 호황을 누리고 있다. 

Canada and Australia are booming.

 

미국 경제는 자유 낙하하고 있다. 

America is in free fall.

이상의 현실은 과연 놀라운 것일까.

Is it any wonder?

 

오바마는 경제적 파산의 재앙에 직면한 가운데 정부 예산 삭감이 “급진적”이라고 주장한다.

Mr. Obama calls cutting spending in the face of economic disaster “radical.”

 

그는 경제를 자극하기 위한 세금 인하를 “경솔하다”고 주장한다.

 He calls tax cuts to spur the economy “reckless.”

 

이미 나라 세금의 대부분을 내고 있는 시민들에 대한 세율을 추가로 대폭 인상하는 것을 “공정하다”고 주장한다.

He calls massive tax increases for those already paying most of the taxes “fair.”

충분한 정부 예산 삭감과는 거리가 먼 공화당 예산안이 “수백 개 국립공원”의 문을 닫을 것이라고 그는 신경질적으로 주장한다.

 He hysterically claims that the GOP budget, which doesn’t cut nearly enough, would force the closure of “hundreds of national parks.”

 

여기서 오바마에게 참고로 지적해 줄 사항이 있다. 미국의 국립공원은 58개밖에 안 된다.

Note to Mr. Obama: We have only 58 national parks.

 

이런 사람이 미국의 지도자다. 세상이 웃을 일이다.

This is our leader. The world is laughing.

캐나다에서는 보수계 집권당이 세금 인상 없이 정부 예산의 균형을 2015년까지 잡겠다고 얼마 전에 약속했다.

In Canada, the governing party (Conservatives) just pledged to balance the budget by 2015 without raising taxes.

 

캐나다는 세금을 내리고 자유무역을 실행하고 정부 규모를 줄이고 공무원 수를 감축하고 국가 부채를 줄이며 정부예산의 균형을 잡는 등 일련의 올바른 조치를 취하고 있다.

Canada is taking the right actions - lower taxes, free trade, cutting the size of government, cutting government employees, cutting debt and balancing the budget.

캐나다와 오스트레일리아는 자국이 보유한 천연자원을 탁월하게 활용하고 있다.

Canada and Australia are brilliantly capitalizing on their natural resources.

 

두 나라는 석유 및 광물 탐사와 에너지 생산을 찬양한다.

They celebrate oil and mineral exploration and energy production.

 

정신 나간 환자들(환경보호주의자들)이 병원의 관리자가 아니다.

 The insane inmates (environmentalists) are not running the asylum.

 

두 나라는 규제조치를 줄인다. 석유 시추와 정유소 건설 및 창업이나 사업 확장을 거의 불가능하게 만드는 규제의 부담을 늘리지도 않는다.

They are streamlining regulations, not adding an ever-increasing regulatory burden that makes it all but impossible to drill for oil, build a refinery, launch a new business or expand an existing one.

이 두 나라와 오바마 행정부를 비교해 보자. 오바마는 근해 석유 시추를 한때 금지했다. 시추 허가 절차를 훨씬 어렵게 만들었다. 캐나다 원유 도입을 가능케 하는 키스톤 XL 송유관 건설을 거부했다. 미국의 석탄산업을 파산시키는 환경보호국의 새 지침을 지지했다.

Compare this to Mr. Obama, who, at one time, banned offshore drilling, has made the drilling permit process far more difficult, rejected the Keystone XL pipeline (from Canada), and supports new Environmental Protection Agency guidelines that will bankrupt the coal industry in America.

대통령 재선에 나선 그는 의도적으로 휘발유 가격과 에너지 사용료를 올렸다.

He is purposely driving up gas prices and energy bills while running for a second term.

 

에너지 장관은 유럽식의 높은 에너지 가격을 원한다고 말했다.
His secretary of energy has stated he wants high, European-style gas prices.

 

오바마는 공공요금을 급격히 올려야 한다고 말한 적이 있다.

Mr. Obama himself once said utility bills must skyrocket.

 

그가 재선에 성공하여 국민의 신임을 또다시 물을 필요가 없어질 경우 정신 나간 짓을 얼마나 더 할 것인가.

How truly insane will his actions be when he is serving a second term, with no need to ever face the voters again?

캐나다는 사회보장제도의 적용연령을 65세에서 67세로 올린다. 미래의 더 큰 보상을 위해 각종 복지혜택 수령을 개인의 선택에 따라 뒤로 미룰 수 있다.

Canada is raising the age for its version of Social Security from 65 to 67, with an option to defer receipt of benefits for a larger check down the road.

 

캐나다 사람들은 자본주의자, 자유시장 신봉자, 재정의 보수주의자처럼 행동하고 생각하고 통치한다. 과거 로널드 레이건이 통치했던 미국이 그랬다.

They are acting, thinking and governing like the capitalist, free-market, fiscally conservative America I once knew and loved. Like Reagan.

 

That’s not my opinion. Just look at the Index of Economic Freedom. America was at the top for many years. We’ve fallen to No. 10, and we’re dropping like a rock. Australia is No. 3 and Canada has moved up to No. 6 and is rising fastCan you imagine?

캐나다와 오스트레일리아는 “미국의 아침”을 맞고 있는데 정작 미국에서는 곡소리가 난다.

For Canada and Australia, it’s “morning in America.”

But here in our country, it’s “mourning in America.”

 

오바마는 미국에 57개 주와 수백 개의 국립공원이 있다고 말하는데 필자는 그런 미국은 모른다. I no longer recognize Mr. Obama’s America, which has 57 states (his words) and hundreds of national parks (his words).

 

 불법 이민자들을 사면해 주고 미국의 이민법을 적용하는 애리조나 주정부를 고소하는 미국을 필자는 알지 못한다.

 I no longer recognize an America that gives amnesty to illegal immigrants, while suing Arizona for enforcing U.S. immigration law.

 

투표 때 신분증의 사진 제시 요구를 인종차별로 몰아붙이는 미국도 필자는 모른다.

I no longer recognize an America that gives weapons to Mexican drug gangs while trying to disarm law-abiding American citizens. I no longer recognize an America that tries to target, hunt, demonize and punish successful taxpayers, while rewarding those who don’t want to work.

I don’t recognize an America that requires me to show identification in order to board a plane, take an college-entrance exam, buy alcohol, pay a doctor, check into a hotel or walk into a government building, but calls it racist to demand an ID in order to vote.

필자는 과거 미국처럼 “자유의 땅”이 되어 가는 캐나다와 오스트레일리아를 좋아한다. 

This is an America led by a man who thinks like a foreigner, preaches foreign concepts and speaks a foreign language of Marxism and income redistribution that I cannot understand. I wasn’t surprised when Mr. Obama leaned over to whisper to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev (unaware the microphone was on) and said that he would take care of Russia after the election, when he’d have “more flexibility.” I was actually surprised that Mr. Obama did not whisper his “sweet nothings” in fluent Russian.

Today, I’m in love with those countries that remind me of everything I believe in - “Oh Canada,” and “Australia, Land of the Free” - countries that remind me of “America, the (once) Beautiful.”
