▣ Youth 청춘  - Samuel Ullman

- 1840.4.13~1924.3.21.

- 미국 實業家, 詩人, 人道主義者.   

- 독일 태생. 부모는 유대인.  

- 1851년 美國 移住.

- 1861년 미국 남북전쟁 勃發발발, 아메리카 연합국 육군(南軍)兵士로 從軍.

- 1867년 Emma Mayer와 결혼. 8명의 자녀.

 

* 맥아더 원수의 좌우명으로 삼고 마닐라, 동경 집무실에 걸어 두었다.

* 2차 대전 후 1945년 9월 27일 昭和天皇가 日比谷総司令部 방문, 둘이서 사진을 찍은 방에 걸려 있던 시이다. 

* 이 시는 1940년 친구 John Lewis(코넬 대학교수)가 보내주었다. 

* 이 시가 松下幸之助씨의 인터뷰에 의해 일본에 소개되어 유명하게 되었다.

 

Youth is not a time of life청춘이란 인생의 어느 때를  뜻하는 것은 아닙니다. It is a state of  Mind; 어떤 마음가짐을 말합니다. 
it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, redLips and supple knees; 청춘이란 발그레한 볼이나 붉은 입술, 유연한 무릎을 의미하는 것이 아닙니다.  it is a matter of theWill, a quality of the imagination,  a vigor of The emotions;

청춘은 의지, 풍부한 상상력, 불타는 열정의 문제입니다.

it is the freshness of the deepSprings of life.

청춘은 삶의 깊은 샘에서 솟아나는  신선함입니다.

　Youth means a temperamental predominance ofCourage over timidity of the appetite, forAdventure over the love of ease. 청춘이란 두려움을 물리치는 용기와 안이함을 뿌리치는 모험심을 의미합니다.
This oftenExists in a man of sixty more than a boy ofTwenty. 때로는 스무 살의 청년보다 예순 살의 노인이 더 청춘일 때가 있습니다.

 

Nobody grows old merely by a number 

Of  years. 나이를 먹는다고 누구나 늙는 것은 아니다. 

 

We grow old by deserting our ideals.

우리는 理想을 잃어버릴 때 늙는다.

 

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give upEnthusiasm wrinkles the soul. 세월은 피부를 주름지게 하지만, 열정을 상실할 때 영혼이 주름집니다.
